From 1948 to 1989 it was ruled by a communist government under Soviet rule. Then, in 1993, Czechoslovakia split peacefuly into two separate states--the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic.

It became a member of the European Union on 1st May 2004. Its capital is Prague, also known as the 'City of a Hundred Spires'. The Republic has a population of 10.3 Million. Its currency is the Czech Crown, and it borders four countries: Germany, Poland, Austria and Slovakia.
