Palacký University is the second oldest institution of higher learning in Czech Republic. It was founded in 1573 as the University of Olomouc. Its medical faculty was established in the late 18th century. The university was later renamed as Palacky Universitý in honor of Frantisek Palacký who was a national revivalist, politician and historian. The university has more than 1000 teachers and research fellows, and its most famous alumni is Gregor Johann Mendel, who many know as the ' Father of Modern Genetics'. In 1993 its medical faculty began offering full-time degree courses in General Medicine entirely in English; and it has attracted students from all over the world. The university is situated in the second most important historical city in Czech Republic-Olomouc, which will give students access to the many historical sites of the country.
